Gale - head study sketch in oils

Gale - head study sketch in oils
Followers of my blog might remember this beautiful lady, the lovely Gale. Sadly she died last year leaving quite a void in her family's hearts. First daughter of the wonderful mare Dalkey Sound is fame enough but she is also the dam of top Scottish chaser Silver By Nature or Tonto to us his
This one gave me a bit of grief to start with as I used oil painting paper. I'm not saying I won't use it again but it will take a bit of getting used to. It feels very strange to touch almost plastic and although it doesn't show in the photo has a yellow tinge. I probably shouldn't have used acrylics on oil paper but I wanted a wash as I wash painting a grey horse. That was something of a mistake as the paper buckled. I did think of scrapping it but plodded on and it has smoothed out quite well and has handled the oils ok.
Looking forward to tomorrow........

Sketch, sketch and sketch a little bit more....

Finished sketch of Oscar Oils 8"x10"
Finished off the sketch of Oscar but feel I lost the spontaneity. This has got me thinking I really need to take time and sketch more. I love the looseness I felt when I started this one and I feel by sketching more it will make my work looser. I'm off to find the pad of oil painting paper I have somewhere in the studio.....

Oscar - a sketch in oils

Oscar - a sketch in oils 8"x10"
This is the first of a few sketches I'll be doing of Oscar and his relatives. They will eventually make up into larger paintings that have been stopped, started and mulled over (and destroyed) in the past two years. We artists can be a sensitive bunch, I dare say it's part of who we are, and what gives us an edge when creating. It also means when things are not going well in other avenues of our life that same sensitivity can be overwhelming. I'm glad to say the sun is peeping out in my life now and this year holds much promise.
I started this sketch on a spare piece of mdf and the intial wash was done with arylics (Burnt Umber). This morning I carried on in oils, As this is only intended to be a sketch the board hasn't been primed. If you are thinking of painting on mdf I would advise priming it with a clear primer first as it tends to absorb the oils. Was a most enjoyable hour passed and I'm pleased enough with the result though I might do a little more....good practice.

Burn's night....

Burn's night here so thought I'd share my favourite poem by the Bard...
To A Kiss

Humid seal of soft affections,
Tend'rest pledge of future bliss,
Dearest tie of young connections,
Love's first snow-drop, virgin kiss.
Speaking silence, dumb confession,
Passion's birth, and infant's play,
Dove like fondness, chaste concession,
Glowing dawn of brighter day.
Sorrowing joy, adieu's last action,
Lingering lips, more to join!
What word's can ever speak affection
Thrilling and sincere as thine!
Robert Burns

"Rolling Fields, Ayrshire" Acrylic 8"x8" Little Paintings Make Hansel Grow

"Rolling Fields, Ayrshire"
Acrylic 8"x8"
Few months ago I recieved a letter asking if I would take part in an Art Exhibition where a painting I would create would be offered in an auction for charity. I accepted gladly because the Hansel Foundation that will benefit from it is only ten or so miles down the road and do an amazing job. The exhibition is call Little Paintings Make Hansel Grow and takes place between 3rd-5th March and is sponsored by Costley & Costley Hoteliers Limited and will take place in Lochgreen House Hotel. Troon. All funds generated from this event will be channelled towards the landscaping of the surrounding garden area of the Therapeutic Community Resource "Our Space" at Hansel.

"A Soft Day" Acrylic 8x8

"A Soft Day"
Acrylic 8"x8"
This is one I did today from photos taken during last 'Summer'. There were quite a few days like this when the weather couldn't quite make up it's mind what it was going to do. I like the simple feel to this one, soft colour and clouds.

Oils 6"x6"
Alice is all done and complete with her tags to keep Defra! I leave the tags to last as I hate doing them, always difficult to get yellow just right.

Much needed fresh air....

At long last after what seemed an age I woke this morning to sunshine and a lovely crisp fresh morning. Walking shoes on and down the country walk with camera in hand, for some much needed fresh! Pretty too look at as well :)

Wee bit more....

Had hoped to get more done but got sore head. Will trundle on tomorrow :)

"Alice" a work in progress

Too much of a good thing can sometimes work against you. Having lots of inspiration can mean your mind goes into over drive. I eventually decided it was time for the first wee moo of 2013. This is 'Alice' lightly sketched using ultramarine/burnt umber acrylics. She's a lovely Angus cross and I'll be doing her in oils. She's already got a sweet look about!

Not quite....

Not quite what I was aiming for with this one but posting it to show they don't always drop of the brush. Frustrating as it can be you have to remember that doing is learning :)

So this is my anything....

It's been one of those days when nothing really went to plan and I eventually succumbed to a headache. But, as always just before I hit the pillow I check blog (at the moment in the hope my photo loading box is back), facebook e.t.c. A voice whispered in my ear do something, anything. So, this is my anything. A rough base for a new piece which I'll start proper tomorrow...the voice says it's called Reflections. Me, I blame the paracetemol....night all :D

"The difference between try and triumph is a little umph." ~Anon
Still can't post photographs in the normal way but discovered you can switch to HTML to post the photo and then switch back again to Compose. Sigh why can't things be simple!

Sorry everyone but it would seem Blogger is having a few problems at the moment and won't allow MOI to post images. Perhaps they are trying to tell me something :((((

"In the Purple" Acrylic 6"x6"

" In the purple"
Acrylic 6"x6"
I love when the hills take on a purple hue with the blossoming heather. We are a bit low here in Ayrshire to have purple hills so I have to travel a little further afield to get these views. I found photos I had taken a few years back on a trip to visit a cousin of my mother's. She lived in Stonehouse and when we visited we usually made a day of it driving around the countryside in Lanarkshire. This is somewhere near Moffat famous for it's wee tearooms, woollen mill and sweetie shop. I have lovely memories of those trips......

First splash of paint in the new year.....

"Rough study of an Ayrshire landscape"
Acrylic 6"x6"
This wee study looks a little bit flung together, possibly because it took at most ten minutes to complete. It's really pretty rough, but at the same time has a sweet naivety too it. I can see, and hope you can, the movement of the clouds sweeping rain in across the fields. In this new year I feel I've turned a corner and art can be my main focus again. I hope you'll visit often and watch my progress...........
