Sketch, sketch and sketch a little bit more....

Finished sketch of Oscar Oils 8"x10"

Finished off the sketch of Oscar but feel I lost the spontaneity. This has got me thinking I really need to take time and sketch more. I love the looseness I felt when I started this one and I feel by sketching more it will make my work looser. I'm off to find the pad of oil painting paper I have somewhere in the studio.....

Perhaps we should have a sketch "challenge," Elizabeth. Our human challenge and apple challenge went so well, haha! ;-) I struggle with maintaining that spontaneity too!

Lol the word challenge brings out the worst in me. I do plan in doing a sketch a day as a warm up for a couple of commissions. Why not try for a sketch a day till the steam runs out...smile! You never know we might even keep it going for the rest of the year. No hard fast rules and any subject that takes your fancy.....

I need to find some kind of surface too...or maybe an old canvas I can put multiple sketches on. ;-) Worth a shot, haha....no guarantees anyone else will ever see them!

Old canvas sounds a good idea. I might gesso over some horrendous paintings. Going to try this daler~rowney oil paper pad I've dug out. I've never used it before so will be another experiment :)

I have to laugh, Elizabeth - I just spent the better part of an hour gessoing over some bad paintings! It gives me a feeling of relief to see them disappear under the gesso! I love experimenting on different supports for my oil painting and recently I gessoed some cardboard and tried that.

Susan setting fire to them is also good for the soul lol

LOL - I may try that next as they do seem to mount up!
