I am not going to embarrass myself by saying how many times I've stopped and started these wee dogs. Suffice to say that painting is something that should be done daily without fail. If not then what you've learnt in 40+ years gets swiftly flushed down the toilet. I am at last happy with how this is progressing. Starting with an underpainting of acrylic washes before laying on the oils. This is Ruby, Mabel will make an appearance soon...she's a wee bit shy yet...smile!

"Hills of Galloway"
Helen M Turner
I know this exhibition is on its last week but theres still a chance for anyone in the area (East Lothian) to pay a visit. My friend and mentor is showing her recent work alongside Mary Davidson, Chris Forsey, James Harringan and Chris Bushe at the Gullane Art Gallery from 10th Aug-1st September. If you can't make it in person why not just feast your eyes on the galley website www.gullaneartgallery.co.uk ....yummy and scrumptous.....smile!

"Distant Blues" Acrylic 6"x6"
Thought it was about time I shared a painting. This was actually a painting that had been lying in the studio unloved. So this evening I put it on the easel painted over the middle of it with French Ultra mixed with white and proceeded to bring a typical Ayrshire landscape to life. It's what I would call a makee upee but sometimes they turn out the best.
Have a great weekend and thanks for looking in.......

Today after my morning walk I decided to take a day off. Well not really a day off, time is cracking on and the garden really needed some attention. We've had a really good summer but a lot of the plants are now over the top and needing to be cut back before things get too messy. It's getting a bit like this morning's country path above although not in such a large scale. I have to say there is nothing more enjoyable than spending time quietly snipping and weeding. Or the smell of fresh cut grass in August which has a musky damp perfume. I feel tired tonight but also strangely revived.....

Back in June, Susan Leyland a hugely talented sculptor friend put out a request on Facebook. Susan a fellow Scot now lives in Italy and she needed help to raise funds for the Italian Horse Protection Foundation. A plan had been hatched to call on artist's who depicted the horse in their art to donate a piece of work that could be auctioned. I happily put my hand up to contribute and next week this painting of Dougal will set off on it's way to Florence, Italy.
I think it apt, that a wee lad who got to live out his whole life being loved and cared for, should in some small way help horses and ponies less fortunate.
I understand that there will also be an exhibition (http://www.porcellinogallery.com) featuring a selection of International Equine Artists which will also raise funds for the IHP running from October to November though I'm not sure at the moment of dates.
